Training and Education

WHDA attorneys are committed to ensuring that our clients and colleagues have the most up-to-date information about recent legal developments.  For example, our attorneys regularly give lectures at corporations, foreign law firms, professional organizations and educational institutions.  Our attorneys also contribute to legal scholarship by writing books, magazine articles and blogs, and are frequently quoted by industry and general publications.

For our overseas clients and associates, WHDA offers a hands-on training program in U.S. intellectual property law including patents, trademarks and copyrights.  Trainees will benefit from a customized training syllabus covering all aspects of the U.S. intellectual property system.  In-house lectures range from discussions about prosecution procedures and strategies to discussions regarding litigation, and even the basics of law firm management. We can adjust our training schedule to accommodate visits as short as one month or as long as a year.

If the trainee’s employer is already a client of ours, the trainee can expect to work closely with WHDA personnel in preparation and prosecution of their employer’s patent or trademark applications.  Through preparation of applications and responses during their training, trainees are able to master the practical aspects of U.S. patent application preparation and prosecution.  Trainees can even gain valuable insight to the realities of patent prosecution by joining WHDA attorneys as they conduct interviews with Examiners and Oral Hearings at the Board.

We welcome trainees from around the world.  Outside of the office, our friendly professionals—whose language skills include Japanese, Cantonese, French and German—enjoy making the trainee program a memorable experience by sharing various aspects of Washington D.C. life with trainees, including sporting and cultural events.  For those that wish to strengthen their English skills, our firm can help arrange enrollment in English language courses available at local schools.  Previous trainees have included representatives of major global corporations, institutions of higher education and foreign patent law firms.  If you desire additional information about the trainee program at WHDA, please contact us.
